The Fan District Cleaning and Lining Project, cleaning out all the water mains and giving them fresh, clean linings for better, cleaner water flow, is proceeding at "lightning speed," says our men in the field.
Phase 1, the area bounded by Grove, Floyd, W. Cary, Strawberry Street, N. and S. Brunswick and N. Morris is done.
Phase 2, Grove and Floyd avenues south to W. Cary Street, from N. Mulberry on the west to S. Addison on the east, extending to Meadow St. between Main and Cary, is nearing completion.
Phase 3 is scheduled to start very soon: The alley between Stuart and Hanover avenues on the north, extending north to Park Avenue on the east side, to the alley between Grove and Floyd to the south, bordered by N. Meadow on the west and N. Morris on the east.
The remaining phases are:
Phase 4: The alley between Stuart and Hanover avenues on the north, to N. Meadow on the east, the alley between Grove and Floyd on the south, and N. Mulberry on the west.
Phase 5: Park Avenue on the north to the alley between Stuart and Hanover on the south, to N. Mulberry on the west, and a block west of Stuart Circle to the east.
Phase 6: N. Mulberry on the west, along Monument Avenue, south to Park Avenue, and east to Boyd Street.
Cleaning and lining projects are conducted from spring to fall each year.

As a Fan resident, I feel this project has been a mess. There's been a glaring lack of communication: nothing on the DPU homepage, no notices to Fan residents. This blog is the only info I've found. I would have liked to know about the project before it began: purpose, approximate schedule, whom to contact for questions and issues, etc. I sent one letter to city government, but got no response.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it would be nice to know what to expect: Is the occasional 24 hours of water gushing from a hydrant a normal part of the process, or did someone screw up?
Finally, the attitude of the workers is more akin to an invading army than to people getting paid with tax dollars. We've had unannounced water shutoffs, concrete sprayed on front lawns, tripping hazards from poorly laid-out temporary pipes...dismal work that no homeowner would accept from a private contractor.
This whole project feels less like something done for us, and more like something done to us.
